Advancing animal welfare for a healthier planet in 2025

As we enter 2025, we at the World Federation for Animals (WFA) are dedicated to strengthening global animal protection efforts and demonstrating how animal welfare is central to addressing some of the world’s most pressing challenges. This year, we’ll focus on critical international policy processes, providing guidance for sustainable practices, and growing our global movement to protect animals and the environment.

Advocating for animal welfare in Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and at the UN Ocean Conference

This year, the UN High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) will review progress on SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and SDG 14 (Life Below Water). We’ll participate in the HLPF to spotlight the essential role of animal welfare in achieving these goals. Through engagement with policymakers and stakeholders, we’ll demonstrate how animal protection can improve public health outcomes and support ocean conservation. In addition, we’ll also participate in the UN Ocean Conference, which supports the implementation of SDG 14, to advocate for stronger protections for marine animals and ecosystems.

Influencing key UN resolutions

We’ll continue engaging with the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Second Committee on resolutions related to agriculture, biodiversity, and sustainable consumption and production. Our advocacy will focus on integrating animal welfare into policies that drive sustainable development and environmental protection. We will also engage with the UN Environment Assembly, which will take place in December 2025,  and the associated resolutions and decisions.

Strengthening One Health in the Pandemic Agreement

In 2025, we’ll actively engage with the Intergovernmental Negotiating Body (INB) during the two scheduled sessions on the Pandemic Agreement. Our focus will be ensuring that primary prevention and the One Health approach—which recognises the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health—are firmly embedded in the agreement. By advocating for stronger preventative measures and animal welfare considerations, we aim to reduce the risk of future pandemics and promote a more resilient global health system.

Promoting responsible antimicrobial use in animal health

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a major threat to global health, and animal welfare plays a vital role in mitigating this risk. This year, we’ll finalise and share best practice guidance for using animal welfare practices to reduce the need for antimicrobials. Our guidance will provide practical solutions for policymakers, farmers, and veterinarians to promote animal health and responsible antimicrobial use, supporting sustainable agrifood systems worldwide.

Elevating animal welfare in global climate action

The fight against climate change is deeply connected to animal welfare. In 2025, we’ll deepen our engagement with the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to showcase how protecting animals and their habitats is vital for achieving climate goals. This work builds on our successful launch of the Animals for Climate Action tool, which guides policymakers in integrating animal welfare into climate strategies.

Supporting biodiversity and health initiatives

Following the adoption of the Biodiversity and Health Global Action Plan, we’ll develop and disseminate tailored guidance to help countries implement this important framework. Our recommendations will highlight how protecting animal welfare supports biodiversity conservation and ecosystem health, contributing to long-term environmental sustainability.

Growing and strengthening our Federation

A stronger, more united animal protection movement is essential for lasting change. In 2025, we’ll continue to grow and consolidate our global network of member organisations. By fostering collaboration, sharing resources, and amplifying collective advocacy, we aim to create a more effective and influential global voice for animal welfare.

Together with our members and partners, we’re making animal welfare a global priority.
